In my search to understand how genuine free will can operate within a lawful universe, I developed a highly speculative model. This dialogue is a pressure test of that idea. It is offered humbly as a thought experiment, not as established truth.
Critic:
Your VPS model is creative. You propose that individual consciousness is like a Virtual Private Server existing outside the physical universe, interfacing with a pixel-based reality through a divine CPU and Holy Spirit database. But I still don’t see how this actually solves the mechanism problem. What makes the VPS’s decision genuinely free rather than determined or random?
JB:
The VPS receives heavy feedback from the physical system — genetics, environment, brain states — which weighs significantly on the decision-making process. However, in moments of relative neural equilibrium, when competing pressures are low, the VPS can make a genuinely free choice. That decision is then passed through the CPU into the Holy Spirit database, which instantaneously updates the associated physical pixels. This creates real downward causation.
Critic:
Even if the VPS has some freedom in those moments, the very first upstream decisions (early in life or in the womb) would be heavily shaped by initial conditions. How do you avoid an infinite regress where freedom is always pushed back to prior causes?
JB:
Character development and free will begin early, even in the womb. While heavily influenced by genetics, the VPS starts modifying its own default programming. Each upstream choice may be as small as one neuron firing instead of another, but that decision can strengthen or initiate an entire neural pathway. Through repeated upstream moments of quiet reflection, these small acts of agency compound via neuroplasticity, gradually shaping our character and default responses in powerful ways.
We even see evidence of this early differentiation in identical twins. Despite sharing the exact same genetics, they display distinct personalities and characteristics from birth. This suggests that some genuine individual agency is at work from the very beginning.
Critic:
This still looks like sophisticated feedback loops within a largely determined system. Where does the ultimate origination of freedom come from?
JB:
I believe consciousness is a God-given spark that exists as a VPS in the spirit realm. It is built into the system as a divine gift. God can intervene cooperatively through prayer, often with small early nudges that have large downstream effects. The exact mechanism may remain partially mysterious, but the practical reality is that we can exercise real, though constrained, agency in upstream moments.
Critic:
So ultimately this model still rests on faith in a transcendent spark and divine framework?
JB:
Yes. It is speculative. I do not claim to have solved the Hard Problem of Consciousness. I am simply proposing one possible architecture that allows genuine free will to exist within a lawful universe, consistent with my understanding of God as Creator.
This VPS model is highly speculative and offered only as a thought experiment. It is my current best attempt to visualize how a transcendent consciousness could interact with a physical universe while allowing real free will. I welcome thoughtful feedback and further refinement.
